What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of healing that accesses the universal energy that is around us. In the Japanese language, “rei” means universal and “ki” means life force energy. Reiki, as a practice, addresses imbalances in our physical, emotional, and spiritual “bodies” by allowing a clear path through which this energy can travel. A touch-free Reiki session provides a sense of relaxation and greater peace. It is not a substitute for medical care, but a complementary practice.

What is a Reiki session like? Before a Reiki session, you may want to think about a topic, concern, ailment, or hope that is foremost in your mind. We call this an intention. It’s ok to have more than one. I will provide calm nature sounds, or music (or none if requested.) You will be lying down, fully-clothed for our session, and you may choose to have your eyes closed or open. After you take a nice, deep breath, we will begin.

Maintaining a distance of several inches above your body, I will slowly move my hands over you and your chakras (energy centers,) assessing which parts might be signaling tension, or a build-up of energy. How I interpret this feeling is tingling in my hands, similar to pins-and-needles. Some people receiving Reiki report feeling warmth, cold, or tingliness. Some may even see colors wash over their field of vision, or feel a release as we concentrate on an area. A common effect is a gurgly stomach! Some people will not feel anything discernible. (Ironically, I usually do not feel much during when I receive a Reiki treatment, but I definitely feel the positive effects after.) After I have gone over your body, I will check for any remaining imbalances, until I feel satisfied that we have addressed areas of concern. After leaving time to come back to our physical reality (because of relaxation,) we will discuss what we noticed!

Most people leave a Reiki session feeling relaxed, refreshed, and even inspired. Sometimes it’s hard to shrug off the tensions of the day or the concerns of a busy mind to have a truly peaceful Reiki session, but have hope that Reiki energy is still going to go where it is needed and even when it is needed.
